East of Niland, which for a time was a bustling town serving the large military base that existed in the 1950’s, Slab City and East Jesus are now colorful communities of artists, drifters, loners, and rugged individualists.
East Jesus is an outdoor museum containing eclectic art made of recycled materials, and Slab City has it’s own Internet Cafe, Hostel, and Library.
We met Chris, one of the directors of East Jesus, who gave us a tour of the self-sufficient community. Well-spoken and serious about the purpose of East Jesus, Chris explained that East Jesus is in negotiations to buy the land it sits on from the State of California.
Both East Jesus and Slab City are world famous as two of the only remaining places on Earth where free expression is encouraged and given free rein.
We hope that never changes.
